Position Description

Reporting to the Faculty Director of the Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS), Professor Gary King, the Privacy Insights Research Associate contributes to the development of statistically valid differentially private systems to protect researchers and society.

This position supports and collaborates with researchers in advancing the mission of the Institute, implementing ideas in computer code, and/or developing theory for ensuring or applying proper methods of statistically valid inference for differentially private data analyses. A successful applicant will acquire and maintain knowledge of emerging technologies, research methodologies, and research trends, making recommendations on future expansion and development of new systems specific to differential privacy.

The Research Associate also works in collaboration with Harvard’s OpenDP project (along with the SEAS Privacy Tools Project and other partners in industry and elsewhere), to develop an open source suite of differential privacy tools and libraries for use in end-to-end differential privacy systems.

This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension based on funding and performance

Basic Qualifications

Minimum four years hands-on experience with statistical programming.

Ph.D. in a relevant area of computer science, statistics, social science, or related discipline.

Additional Qualifications

Experience with differential privacy preferred.

Must have experience developing research tools successfully used by other scholars.

Demonstrated interest in continued learning of new trends in social science research, in acquiring and developing new methods and algorithms, and expanding statistical programming skills required.

Must work well with others.

Incumbent will work remotely based on Harvard University’s COVID-19 response policy until further notice. Work must be performed within the US. Individuals who are located in the US may work outside of Massachusetts (MA) until 90 days after the MA COVID-19 state of emergency is no longer in effect. Individuals located in the US working outside of MA must acknowledge to Harvard in writing that after the interim pandemic policy ends, the employee must relocate to MA and their campus work location.

J-1 Research Scholar visa sponsorship may be available in limited circumstances to individuals already in the US on a visa, depending on their specific immigration status.
