Research Associate/Assistant in Manufacturing of Nanomaterials Using Deep Eutectic Solvents

A position is open for a Postdoctoral Research Associate/Assistant at the University of Cambridge, Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, in the group of Dr Laura Torrente as part of an EPSRC Collaborative Research Project with the Universities of Bath and Bern.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in chemical reaction engineering, fluid dynamics and synthesis and characterisation of nano-materials, including a PhD (or close to gaining their PhD) in a relevant area. Experience with working with flow systems, microfabrication, process engineering and catalysis will be advantageous.

The aim of the project is the design and development of an innovative manufacturing platform to enable the deployment of deep eutectic solvents in industrial process, in particular for the synthesis of nanoparticles and nanostructured materials. The research will involve the design of micro-devices guided by fluid dynamic simulations to understand and control the mass transfer and mixing effects by modification of the reactor geometry. Solvent recyclability, particle formation mechanism and morphology control will also be studied. Full characterisation of the resulting materials and their catalytic properties will feedback the optimisation of the design.

The ability to work both as part of a team and independently, coupled with excellent communication, organisational and problem solving skills are required. The duties / responsibilities of this post include developing and driving research objectives, writing up work for presentation and publication, collaborating with academic and industrial partners, assisting in the supervision of student research projects, and delivering seminars and occasional talks as outlined on the Further Information document.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 August 2022 in the first instance.
