£27511 to £32817 per annum (pro-rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience (minimum £30,942 with relevant PhD).

Applications are invited to the above role to support the principal investigator Professor Paul Dyer in conducting research in the area of fungal biology, specifically the evolution of antifungal resistance in the opportunistic pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. This post is part of a collaborative Wellcome Trust funded project involving academic and medical centres in the UK and the Netherlands with the aim of understanding and mitigating the impact of emerging antifungal resistance. The post will use a combination of classical, genomic, and molecular techniques to investigate the role of sexual and parasexual reproduction in gene flow of antifungal and virulence traits in Aspergillus fumigatus, a principal cause of aspergillosis disease in humans. The post holder will be expected to undertake independent research as well as working as part of a team, this will include using approaches or methodologies and techniques appropriate to the type of research, and they will be responsible for writing up their work in order to contribute to published outcomes. 

The role holder will have the opportunity to use their initiative and creativity to identify areas for research, develop research methods and extend their research portfolio. 

Candidates must hold a PhD (or be near completion) in a relevant field of Microbiology, ideally involving Fungal Biology/Medical Mycology. They must understand microbial laboratory practices and have existing skills in microbial culture of fungi. They must be familiar with molecular biology techniques (e.g. DNA and RNA extraction, electrophoresis, PCR and qRT-PCR) including transformation and possess bioinformatic skills. Previous experience of working with filamentous fungi or yeasts, in particular pathogens and/or Aspergillus species, is highly desirable.

This fixed-term role is available immediately for a period of 36 months. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week), however job share arrangements may be considered.
