Applications are invited for a Research Associate/Fellow in Polymer Chemistry to join an exciting project. The project is focused on developing previously identified polymers that show an ability to prevent bacterial biofilm formation on surfaces. The polymer has already been successfully CE-marked as a urinary catheter coating and this project aims to further develop the commercial potential of the polymer coating. The project will be hosted in the Centre for Additive Manufacturing at the University of Nottingham, and there is a collaboration with two UK-based companies.

The project aims to improve the processability of polymers by utilising spray drying as a method of preparing material that could be supplied to potential end users. To achieve this the candidate will synthesising polymers using conventional and droplet microfluidic processing. The project will then investigate the suitability of spray drying by preparing commercially relevant samples. The candidate will develop and test different coating methodologies (dip-coating and spray coating) using polymer that has been processed using the spray drying process. To ensure that the polymer has retained the anti-biofilm properties, the candidate will provide samples to microbiologist colleagues who will perform biofilm assays on samples. The candidate will be expected to take ownership of data and present regular updates on progress.

This project will help develop new manufacturing and processing tools for the processing of polymers with the aim to increase the commercial interest in current University IP. The appointed candidate will work as part of an interdisciplinary team and will be expected to liaise efficiently between collaborative scientists and external companies.

Candidates must hold or expect to shortly obtain a PhD, in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or similar Science / Engineering degree and have a background in polymer chemistry or a closely related discipline. Candidates must be able to demonstrate practical experience of synthesis techniques relevant to polymer chemistry, use of the relevant characterisation techniques used in the definition of polymerised molecular structures and experience in relating how this data will influence polymer properties. Experience of droplet microfluidic processing techniques is also be essential. 

The post is offered on a full time (36.25 hours per week), fixed term contract for 6 months. If the successful candidate starts after 1 May 2021 the contract has an end date of 31 October 2021. Job share arrangements may be considered.
