The University of Zurich together with the University Hospital of Zurich are embarking on a concerted effort to develop informatics programs to advance biomedical research using cutting edge computational approaches. As part of these efforts, the Krauthammer research group investigates topics in clinical data science and translational bioinformatics, such as knowledge discovery from Big Data sources (Electronic Medical Record), development of Natural Language processing, information retrieval and extraction routines, as well as the analysis of human Omics data. The group is headed by Prof. Michael Krauthammer and is part of the Department of Quantitative Biomedicine (DQBM). We are looking to expand the team and hire a Research Software Engineer to expand the team's technical capacity.

Your responsibilities

In this unique role, you will work with an interdisciplinary team of researchers, biostatisticians, and data engineers to support a variety of research projects in clinical data science and bioinformatics. You will apply your unique technical and practical skills to bring research ideas to fruition, deploying data tools and visualizations in live clinical settings.

You will work on a number of research projects, including the development of clinical risk prediction tools and the creation of apps to optimize hospital resource scheduling:
  • Master how to extract data from the electronic medical records and other data systems at the hospital
  • Collaborate with researchers to understand the data requirements for their projects
  • Create and maintain data pipelines in support of research projects
  • Build data applications, tools, and visualizations, and deploy them in a clinical setting to be used by clinical practitioners

Your profile

  • Completed your bachelor's degree in computer science or related mathematical, scientific or technical field
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and experience with relational databases
  • Experience with object-oriented scripting languages, preferably Python
  • Experience with web frameworks for deploying data visualizations and tools, such as Flask or Dash
  • Strong time management skills and ability to balance working on multiple projects at the same time
  • Excited to learn new technical tools
  • Fluency in English

  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies
  • German language skills
  • Familiarity with Hospital software, such as DICOM and RIS
  • Familiarity with machine learning frameworks

  • Experience with Apache Kafka and Kubernetes
