The ARC Centre of Excellence in Synthetic Biology (CoESB) is a new, cross-disciplinary, and national research centre, which aims to create the knowledge and strategies necessary for Australia to develop a vibrant bioeconomy building on the nation’s strengths in agriculture. The Centre brings together leading researchers in the humanities, social and technological sciences in an international industry, research and civil society network. It is funded by the Australian Research Council for seven years from 2020 to 2026. 

About This Opportunity

Contribute to a Transformative Innovation Policy research agenda which unpacks the role of science and technology policy and Universities in both industrial and social change. The position will contribute to research which interrogates what problems synthetic biology is designed to address, who will benefit and who will pay, whether social rather than technological solutions are required and how we govern synthetic biology policy to ensure effective deliberation on these questions. 

The successful applicant will be based at the University of Queensland and will collaborate actively with the CoESB’s national and international network of participants. The successful applicant will also have access to the CoESB’s research training and professional development opportunities, international visiting fellowships and exchanges (travel arrangements permitting), and the Centre’s network of industry partners. 

This position is located at St Lucia.

Our Ideal Candidate

With a PhD in science and technology policy or another related field of public policy, political science or sociology; you should demonstrate expert knowledge of policy studies and science and technology policy in particular. You should also demonstrate the ability to undertake high quality research, as evidenced by a track record of scholarly publications and have prior experience with research collaborations. Evidence of other contributions to research, such as external grant applications in addition to Experience in liaising and collaborating with external agencies to develop cooperative research initiatives, will be highly desirable.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for up to 3 years at Academic level B.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $99,542.80 - $118,206.73, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $116,465.07 - $138,301.88.
