Role Description

Department

The Centre for Health Economics (CHE) at the University of York has a rich portfolio of applied and methodological research in Economic Evaluation and Health Technology Assessment (HTA).   We are expanding and complementing our existing work in this field through a programme of high quality and rigorous methods and applied research of national and international policy relevance on the Economics of Stratified, Personalised and Precision Medicine.   An important component of this research programme entails the use of novel quantitative methods to enhance policy decisions using quasi-experimental research methods, with increasing focus on the use of modern causal inference techniques and decision modelling.  We are seeking to appoint a Grade 6 Research Fellow to contribute to this research agenda.  The ideal candidate should have a strong background in quantitative methods, such as econometrics and statistics with emphasis on causal inference and an interest in developing and applying these methods for economic evaluation for HTA decision making.

The Research Fellow will mainly contribute to an ongoing, methodologically focussed EU-funded research project (watch this brief video).  The project includes academic co-investigators from several European countries, national HTA agencies (i.e. NICE, TLV, ZIN) and patient organisations.  The researcher will have training opportunities to develop their analytical skills in health economics evaluation and further their competence in the use advanced causal inference methods, by attending relevant summer schools and workshops.

Role

  • To develop methods for the analysis of non-randomised studies, using state-of-the-art approaches from causal inference, micro-econometrics, statistics and epidemiology.
  • To apply (and where relevant) extend causal inference methods to fit the requirements of healthcare economic evaluation.
  • To conduct individual and collaborative research projects, which would include: analysis and interpretation of research data; use of appropriate research techniques and methods; writing up of research results and dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations, public engagement and outreach activities; contributing to the identification of possible new areas of research.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications needed

Applicants are required to have the following qualifications:

  • Undergraduate and master level degrees (or equivalent) in economics, health economics, statistics, statistical epidemiology and related subjects
  • The post requires a knowledge of modern causal inference methods, and experience in methodologically focussed research using statistical/econometrics methods.
  • Advanced skills in the use of R statistical software are essential, familiarity with Stata statistical software and Python programming language is desirable.
  • The ability to write up research work for publication in high profile journals, and good communication skills to engage with a wide-ranging audience is essential.

This is a fixed term contract for 24 months.
