  • Be part of research project in contributing to the future movement sensors in collaboration with A/Prof Jong Chow at Australian National University
  • Day-to-day reporting to the Project Leader, Professor Arnan Mitchell, Director, Micro Nano Research Facility, Electronic & Telecommunications Engineering
  • Remuneration at Academic Level B ($98,495 - $116,965) + 17% superannuation

About You & the Role

  • Conduct and project manage high quality, productivity-driven research through establishing techniques such as reactive sputtering to deposit high quality dielectric thin-films that can be used for the reliable fabrication of low loss optical waveguides
  • Perform research focusing on establishment of high quality, low optical loss waveguides formed from sputtered silicon nitride films and characterization of film properties such as stress, optical loss, surface roughness, thickness, uniformity as well as analysing and optimizing it to support a reliable fabrication of low loss integrated photonic devices
  • Collaborate with InPAC team at RMIT, partners at The Australian National University and Advanced Navigation to realise photonic chip components for precision movement sensors as well as achieving research objectives in line with the University research strategies
  • Preparing and producing competitive research grant proposals targeting Category 1 through active and effective liaison with industry and government
  • Initiate and contribute in various research development strategies through documentation of project progress, monthly meetings with the project partners as well as presenting the projects progress and project reports
  • Manage research project timelines and ensure research reports meet compliance requirements
  • Work independently as well as collaboratively with multidisciplinary team as well as ability to effectively communicate research outcomes through submitting high quality papers/ journals, delivering seminars and attending conferences
  • Involve in varied administrative duties based on the level of appointment and participate in meetings as well as annual work planning and performance management processes related to the goals of research projects or work of the organisational unit
  • Contribute your 10% of your time to mentor, train & supervise postgraduate Higher Degree by Research students as part of your coursework teaching activities

You will have:

  • Evidence of research output and excellent track record as well as delivering high impact research outputs in design, fabrication and characterization of integrated photonic circuits including publications, conference contributions and/or technical reports
  • Competency and solid working knowledge and hands-on experience of optical materials and fabrication of optical waveguides are desirable
  • Capability and capacity to communicate (both verbal and written) and present research findings, concepts and knowledge with sound problem-solving & analytical skills
  • Evidence of preparing and producing competitive research grant proposals
  • Ability to manage and plan time effectively and efficiently to conduct innovative research independently and collaboratively across multi-disciplinary team, industry and government
  • Experience in supervising and mentoring postgraduate by research students
  • Passion and ability to build strong relationships across multi-disciplinary teams and environments

Qualifications

Mandatory: PhD qualified or submitted thesis in the Electronic or Telecommunications Engineering or in a closely related subject will be considered.

Preferred: Candidate who have experience in undertaking systematic scientific research and technology development in collaboration with microelectronics fabricators including in-house or external foundries is an added advantage
