Salary
£30942 to £40322 per annum (pro-rata if applicable) depending on skills and experience. Salary progression beyond this scale is subject to performance.

Applications are invited for the above post in the School of Sociology and Social Policy (SSP). SSP is a vibrant, diverse and exciting centre for social science teaching and research.  We are a multidisciplinary unit covering criminology, public policy, social policy, social work and sociology.  Cutting across these disciplinary boundaries are two shared values: the promotion of global and social justice and a desire in our teaching and research to ‘make a difference’. The research fellow will be based in the Institute for Science and Society, one of the leading centres in Science and Technology Studies (STS) within the UK, Europe and Internationally. The purpose of this role is to carry out research as part of the project ‘Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy in Europe’ (VAX-TRUST) which is directed by Dr Pru Hobson-West at the University of Nottingham. The project is funded by European Commission Horizon 2020 programme and is coordinated by the University of Tampere, Finland. The project involves a multi-method and multi-level analysis of vaccine hesitancy. Empirically the project focuses on specific Target Regions in seven European countries (Finland, Belgium, Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, Portugal and the UK), and Europe as a whole. It studies the challenges related to distrust of expertise in relation to vaccines and vaccinations. Based on the research findings, the project will also involve the implementation of interventions for healthcare professionals, supporting them with up-to-date knowledge of vaccine hesitancy.

If appointed you will work closely with Dr Hobson-West to contribute to the project. More specifically you will study vaccine hesitancy in the UK and be responsible for (a) critical review of previous research on vaccine hesitancy, (b) a quantitative study using existing Eurobarometer data (c) a quantitative and qualitative media analysis d) qualitative observations and interviews with healthcare professionals and parents at local healthcare centres in the East Midlands. The post will also involve the development and implementation of new interventions for healthcare professionals. Finally, the post holder will be required to engage with ethical protocols, be involved in academic publishing, outreach activities (especially for healthcare professional students), participate in regular team meetings, and present research at seminars and academic conferences.

You should hold a PhD in a relevant subject area (social science or humanities). A PhD in medical sociology, or in Science and Technology Studies, would be an advantage. You should be able to demonstrate experience in relevant research methodologies, and have an interest in vaccination/public health. We will appoint at Research Fellow level. The post is available from 1st April 2021 and offered on a fixed term contract until 1 December 2023.

Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours per week); however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 29 hours/week). Please specify in your application the number of preferred hours. Job share arrangements will also be considered.
