Research Fellow in Virology

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in virology? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

We have a vacancy for a virologist to study the replication dynamics of a group of viruses known as the bunyaviruses. This appointment is part of an international collaboration involving scientists working in virology, mathematics, healthcare and population geography that seeks to understand how bunyavirus genetic diversification mechanisms work at the cellular, host and population levels. Bunyaviruses are segmented RNA viruses that show high genetic variation due to their ability to exchange their genes in a process known as reassortment, which can create highly pathogenic variants. The goal of the project is to define the parameters that drive bunyavirus reassortment, and the fitness of resulting reassortant viruses. The work will involve precise quantification of viral products during both single-species and dual-species co-infections, as well as analysis of both viable and non-viable reassortants using state-of-the-art digital PCR and super-resolution, single molecule microscopy. These data will be used to develop mathematical models that describe the bunyavirus intracellular life cycle and the possible reassortment outcomes.

You should have a PhD (or be close to completion) in virology, with experience in working with viruses, eukaryotic cell culture, quantification of viral infections and components, molecular biology, genetic manipulation and cell imaging techniques, as well as a developing publication record in high ranking journals. The successful candidate will join the thriving research environment within the , and have the opportunity to use and gain experience of new state-of-the-art research facilities in cell biology, molecular virology and cell imaging.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies.
