Research Fellowships in Mathematics

Bristol University

The Role

The Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research (HIMR) invites applications for Heilbronn Research Fellowships. Fellows will divide their time equally between:

  1. Their own research, and

  2. The classified research programme of the Heilbronn Institute

This provides a unique opportunity to pursue independent projects while engaging in collaborative, high-impact research.

Research areas of interest include:

  • Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Combinatorics

  • Data Science, Number Theory, Probability

  • Quantum Computing

  • Other areas of Pure Mathematics, Statistics, and Mathematical/Theoretical Physics

Up to 7 appointments will be made across:

  • University of Bristol

  • Imperial College London

  • King’s College London

  • University of Manchester

Positions at the University of Bristol may focus on Data Science or Quantum Computing.

What You Will Do

  • Join a cohort of ~50 Heilbronn Research Fellows, including leading early-career mathematicians in the UK.

  • Receive expert mentoring from the host department.

  • Participate in a national programme of career development events coordinated by Associate Chairs at Bristol, King’s College, and Manchester.

  • Contribute to challenging, classified mathematical problems set by the Head of HIMR in conjunction with GCHQ, often as part of a collaborative team.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be UK residents and UK or dual UK nationals.

  • Fellows must apply for national security clearance before appointment.

  • The Heilbronn Institute particularly encourages applications from women in mathematics and is a supporter of the LMS Good Practice Scheme.
