Research Professor (W3) of Data Science and Knowledge Media 

The position is due to commence on January 1, 2021

The successful candidate is recognized for her/his research in the field of Data Science, which should complement the research profile of the Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM). This includes the application of Data Science to the analysis of data gained from knowledge-related media use (for instance, learning analytics, social media data, eye tracking, or EEG data).

The candidate should have an outstanding and internationally visible research profile in a field like Machine Learning for Social Sciences, Educational Data Mining, Visual Analytics, Applied Statistics, or Computational Linguistics and is expected to be able to raise substantial amounts of competitive, extramural funding.

One of the responsibilities of the position is to establish the research lab “Data Science for Knowledge Media Research” and to be involved in the management and further development of the institute. It is expected that the applicant is open to applying her/his methodological skills to different types of data and willing to conduct cooperative, interdisciplinary research with other labs at the institute. The Leibniz-Institut für Wissensmedien (IWM) researches knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing and cooperation with digital media. The Institute is a member of the Leibniz Association and is committed to international standards of academic excellence. The successful applicant will also be a faculty member at Tübingen University.

There will also be ties with the Cyber Valley Baden-Württemberg ( In this context, synergies with the Cluster of Excellence "Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science" are encouraged. 

Required qualifications include a PhD or equivalent international degree and postdoctoral qualifications equivalent to the requirements for tenure.
