Overview: 

We are seeking an Electronics Engineer who will focus on developing electronic designs for beamline control systems including motion control, sample environment and a variety of other interfaces associated with beamline data acquisition.  This position resides in the DAQ Integration Group in the Neutron Instrument Technologies Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).  

 

As part of our research team, you will…

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Serve as electrical system technical lead for instrument improvement projects.
  • Prepare drawings and assembly/test instructions including chassis design, mounting hardware, and wiring diagrams for electrical and electronic systems and light mechanical fabrications.
  • Provide technical guidance to bargaining unit staff who are fabricating assemblies for instrument control systems including motion, digital and analog IO panels, and ensure accuracy and conformance to specification.
  • Procure and track spare inventory levels of assemblies, components, and cables.
  • Perform troubleshooting using electronic test equipment.
  • Assemble prototype platforms and test stands as necessary.
  • Support routine maintenance procedures as well as new instrument installations.
  • Follow SNS and HFIR work control procedures for installations and preventative maintenance routines.
  • Provide operational support for Instrument Data Acquisition and Controls systems.
  • This position operates during typical daytime office hours, but some off-hours and weekend support is required to support the 24/7 operational needs of the HFIR and SNS.
  • Must be able to receive and maintain various certifications required to perform duties, such as radiation worker and electrical worker qualifications.
  • Be capable of lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds, climbing stairs, and climbing ladders.
  • The individual must have the manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination necessary for basic soldering and assembly of electronics components.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in electronics, engineering, management or related field, and 5 or more years of applicable experience.
  • Proficiency with Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs.
  • Familiarity with Galil and Parker motion control systems.
  • Strong mechanical understanding of complex mechanical assemblies, including precision position systems.
  • A working knowledge of various types of test equipment such as multi-meters, oscilloscopes, arbitrary function generators, as well as experience with basic hand and power tools.
  • Experience with CAD software such as AutoCAD.
  • Experience with Windows Operating System and Microsoft Office tools.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to develop complex electrical systems for beamline automation, control, and data acquisition.
  • Ability to design layouts, schematics, and connection diagrams for large projects with little to no oversight.
  • Capable of interpreting manufacturer data sheets and technical documents.
  • Ability to create, interpret, and follow test procedures.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with PID control systems.
  • Familiarity with LabVIEW and the Linux Operating Systems.
  • Basic soldering skills.
  • Experience working at a National Laboratory or a scientific research facility is beneficial.
  • Willingness to complete ongoing skill development is encouraged in this position.

 

About Neutron Sciences Directorate:
