The Environment for Development (EfD) is a unit at the School of Business, Economics and Law at University of Gothenburg. EfD is a global network of environmental economics research centers primarily based in the Global South. The overall objective of EfD is to support poverty alleviation and sustainable development by building environmental economics’ capacity for policy-making processes. EfD has centers hosted by academic institutions in Central America, Chile, China, Colombia, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Vietnam. EfD was launched in 2007 by the Environmental Economics Unit at the Department of Economics, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. EfD continues to work in close partnership with the Department of Economics, which has around 100 employees and 800 students. The collaboration is particularly strong with the research groups in environmental, behavioral and development economics.

Job assignments

The selected candidate will have a dual role as a researcher and responsible for the coordination of EfD's collaborative programs. As a researcher, the selected candidate will conduct high-quality research in environmental economics, climate economics and development economics with a special focus on issues related to poverty and sustainability in low- and middle-income countries. As responsible for EfD's collaborative programs, the person must have well-developed skills in administration and management to be able to support research within the programs and coordinate research applications that involve the programs. A close collaboration with EfD centers in the Global South is key to the role.

Tasks include:

• Conduct high-quality research in environmental economics, climate economics and development economics with a special focus on issues related to poverty and sustainability in low- and middle-income countries.
• Responsible for the coordination of EfD’s collaborative and thematic research, and provide support to the process around EfD's Research Fund – specific management and administrative tasks include:
• Support to the collaborative programs with the aim of developing strategies and ensuring adequate planning, as well as assisting in the institutional development of programs.
• Prepare processes and documentation regarding collaborative and thematic projects in line with current strategies, prior to a funding decision by EfD's Research Committee.
• Organize calls for the collaborative programs and in collaboration with academic partners.
• Coordinate and evaluate reviews of submitted proposals from the collaborative programs.
• Follow up results from ongoing research projects.
• Support communication about collaborative research on the website as well as in annual and other reports and communication materials.
• Assist in the organization of virtual and physical meetings for the collaborative programs.
• Develop and coordinate research project and program proposals in collaboration with research groups from the collaborative programs and in thematic areas, with submission to external funders.

Qualifications

The successful applicant should meet the following qualifications:

• A PhD in economics with a focus on environmental and development economics.
• A strong profile as an active researcher, specializing in the application of environmental economics in low- and middle-income countries.
• Publication in relevant international scientific journals.
• Documented experience of and commitment to capacity development, policy engagement and impact in environmental and development economics in low- and middle-income countries.
• Excellent skills in administration and project management, as well as a good ability to collaborate with colleagues and partner organizations.
• Excellent knowledge of English as a working language, both written and oral.

Merits that are taken into account are:

• Analytical skills in and knowledge of current research in environmental and development economics.
• Field experience from low-income countries.
• Success in seeking research funding.
• Demonstrable experience in the development and implementation of thematic research programs, preferably in collaboration with international organizations, funders and other stakeholders.
• Experience of and good ability to collaborate in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural environment.
• Knowledge of languages other than English that are relevant to EfD (i.e. the languages used in EfD countries).
