The Department of Marine Sciences is a leading institution in marine research, integrating research, education, and innovation. The department operates two research stations and the RV Skagerak, a state-of-the-art research vessel for multidisciplinary marine science.
The Skagerak Facility provides:
Research vessel support
Scientific equipment, sensors, and platforms
Marine data management
Technical, crew, and management personnel support
The Facility also leads SWERVE – the Swedish Research Vessel Infrastructure for Marine Research – supporting national use of research vessels and technician training.
The Research Engineer provides technical support for marine research and education aboard the RV Skagerak. This includes ship- and shore-based duties, equipment maintenance, data management, and supporting voyage operations.
Key aspects:
At-sea support: up to 3-week trips, ~100 days at sea annually
Work closely with Skagerak Facility IT/Data Manager and Ship Manager
Handle diverse scientific and commercial users from Sweden and internationally
Security clearance required
Operate and maintain oceanographic sensors, sampling equipment, and research platforms (e.g., CTD, ADCP, Ferrybox, echo sounders)
Troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and modify mechanical and electronic systems
Support data collection, IT systems, and data pipelines
Manage workshop and warehouse inventory, develop and maintain inventory software
Train voyage participants in scientific platform use
Support planning, purchase, and implementation of new equipment
Contribute to safety, collaboration, and documentation onboard and onshore
Participate in SWERVE actions and the Swedish National Marine Technicians Network
Required:
Sea-going experience supporting marine research or education
Strong interpersonal skills, calm and professional onboard
Advanced knowledge of at least one key scientific system or practical experience with several
Technical skills in maintenance, repair, and calibration
Familiarity with IT networks, data handling, and scientific data systems
Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
Fluent in English (Swedish beneficial)
Desirable:
Scientific background or experience in laboratory settings
Experience in marine sciences (chemistry, oceanography) or electronics/sensors
Knowledge of work environment and health & safety
Experience with inventory/equipment management software
Full-time (100%) with work primarily aboard RV Skagerak, at homeport, and port facilities
Office facilities in Gothenburg Natrium building available as needed
Starting date: upon agreement
