Researcher in Network and Wireless Security

Catholic University of Leuven Department of Computer Science

DistriNet is an international research group with extensive expertise in secure & distributed software. Embedded in the Department of Computer Science of KU Leuven, DistriNet brings together a substantial critical mass of over 100 researchers, including 14 full-time professors, 11 permanent research staff members, 13 postdoctoral researchers, and about 70 PhD researchers. The conducted research is systems-centric, always application-driven and often performed in close collaboration with industry. The know-how of DistriNet formed the basis of multiple spin-off companies (https://distrinet.cs.kuleuven.be/spinoffs/). The new network security team of DistriNet studies various security aspects of network protocols and their implementations (e.g. security and privacy of Wi-Fi, TLS, HTTPS, VPNs, etc). We are looking for new colleagues on various topics in this research domain.

Project

In this position you will perform research related to network security under the supervision of Mathy Vanhoef. The research can cover various aspects of network security, where common goals include analyzing new protocols, investigating the security of implementations, studying privacy aspects, etc. We have strong expertise in Wi-Fi security, as well as SSL, HTTPS, and VPN protocols, but research on all network protocols is within scope. Your specific research topic can be discussed and is to be agreed upon.

Possible topics include:

  • Security analysis of new or widely-used Wi-Fi features (e.g. enterprise network security, hotspot security, privacy aspects of wireless protocols, broadcast encryption, etc),
  • Researching techniques to discover logical implementation flaws in network protocol implementations, this can be using black-box techniques or using program analysis techniques such as symbolic execution,
  • Analysis of VPNs and tunneling protocols (e.g. IPSec, WireGuard, OpenVPN, SSH, etc.),
  • General fuzzing of network protocols and improving the performance of fuzzing techniques,
  • Securing the firmware that runs on Wi-Fi chips,
  • Privacy analysis of network protocols,

Profile

You share our strong interest in network and/or wireless security and you have
  • a master in computer science (or equivalent),
  • an analytical mind,
  • technical skills,
  • fluent English communication skills.

Offer

We offer a full-time position as researcher, with or without a PhD trajectory in computer science:

  • you will join a supportive and collaborative team in which you can develop know-how and expertise in state-of-the-art technologies,
  • you will have the opportunity to build up research and innovation skills that are essential for a future career in academia or in industry,
  • you will work in a multicultural working environment at the KU Leuven High Tech Campus.
