Contract: Full-time, maximum 3.5 years (possibly extendable to 4 years)
Trial Period: 6 months
The Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Machine-Learning, Statistics and Data-Centric Engineering.
The successful candidate will work within the research project “Advances in generalized Bayesian inference via differential-geometric methods” funded by the Research Council of Finland, under the supervision of Academy Research Fellow Marcelo Hartmann and Research Fellow Luu Hoang Phuc Hau (Nanyang Technological University).
We have been developing computational algorithms and theory grounded in notions of information geometry and Riemannian geometry to enhance Bayesian statistical inference and machine-learning related methods. We are part of the Helsinki Probabilistic Machine Learning Lab.
The project seeks to further develop and broaden the range of loss functions by incorporating concepts from differential geometry. We leverage the theory of estimating functions to create optimal inference algorithms for the proposed loss functions based on their underlying Riemannian geometry, as well as for those previously introduced in the literature. These advancements hold significant potential for applications spanning scientific research and societal challenges at large.
The primary research site is the University of Helsinki, but strong collaboration exists with Aalto University, FCAI (Finnish Center for Artificial Intelligence), ELLIS unit Helsinki, and ELLIS Institute Finland. Collaborations also extend to the University of Cambridge, Technical University of Denmark, University of Warwick, Hamburg University of Technology, and others.
The Doctoral Researcher is expected to:
Advance the research project together with the project leader
Conduct doctoral studies and research work leading to a completed PhD thesis within 4 years
Your work may also include teaching duties (at most 5% of annual working time).
Master’s degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or related field with emphasis on applied mathematics/statistics/machine-learning
Prior experience in probabilistic machine-learning, neural networks, statistical inference, or data modelling is considered a bonus
Experience with at least one programming language (Python, Julia, R, Matlab, etc.)
Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken
Note: All doctoral researchers at the University of Helsinki must apply to a doctoral programme. The successful candidate should apply to the Doctoral Programme in Computer Science (DoCS) and obtain the study right within the trial period of six months.
Starting salary: approx. 2650–2800 EUR/month, depending on qualifications and experience
Comprehensive benefits, including:
Occupational health care
Access to high-quality sports facilities
Professional development opportunities
Finland offers: free high-quality education (also in English), generous family benefits, universal healthcare, and a high quality of life. Finland has been ranked the happiest country in the world for eight consecutive years.
A diverse and equitable study and work culture is important to us. We encourage applicants from all backgrounds, including those with disabilities, non-traditional career paths, or family/caring responsibilities, as well as international applicants and those displaced by conflict or war.
Please submit your application in English, including the following documents:
Motivation letter (max. 1 page) describing interest in the position and qualifications
Curriculum vitae including list of publications (if any)
One example of a written analytical text (e.g., Master’s thesis). If co-authored, specify your contribution
Names and contact information of two referees willing to provide reference letters (optional)
Deadline: October 22, 2025 (23:59 UTC +3). Early applications are encouraged.
