Senior Academic Position in Neurosciences

University of Antwerp Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences

Senior academic staff Neurosciences

Department : Department of Biomedical Sciences

Regime : Full-time

The Department of Biomedical Sciences in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical, Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences has the following full-time vacancy:

Senior academic staff in the field of Neurosciences

You will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: education, research and services. Your role also includes organisational and managerial aspects.

  • You provide high-quality education in Biomedical Sciences and Biochemistry and Biotechnology at Bachelor and/or Master level. In the master program in Biomedical Sciences (English master program in NeuroSciences) you translate neuroscience research into educational activities. In this program neuronal structures and mechanisms of behaviour and memory as well as various neurological and psychiatric disorders are addressed. You provide to both national and international students neurosciences research training at undergraduate and graduate level.
  • You play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
  • You supervise students and their Bachelor and Master dissertations.

  • You expand high-quality scientific research in Neurosciences. Neurosciences is one of the major research domains of the university of Antwerp, with amongst others a dedicated Research Centre of Excellence and a VIB-UAntwerp Center for Molecular Neurology hosted in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. Scientists have access to state of the art core facilities and tool oriented research teams, providing infrastructure and support in brain and neuro biobanking, next-generation sequencing, proteomics, bio-informatics, advanced microscopy, in-vivo small animal, preclinical (EEG, MRI, BLI,PET/SPECT/CT) imaging, complemented with a rodent behavioural experimentation unit. In addition, there are state of the art animal facilities, including songbird, SPF and infectious disease facilities. There is also the possibility for the successful applicant to acquire an existing fully equipped lab with experimental set ups for molecular, cellular and network excitability (patch-clamp systems; multi electrode array systems).
  • You initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of scientific research projects. You also participate in ongoing research programmes. The current neurosciences research in the department -both basic and translational- is focussing on neuroplasticity and on different neurodegenerative brain diseases and peripheral neuropathies. This research relies on the use of human iPSCs and organoids, yeast, drosophila, mice, rats, zebrafish and songbirds model systems. Your research can be focussed on a variety of neuro related domains including, but not limited to, systems neurobiology, biochemical and cellular methods, electrophysiology, research linking neuronal activity from cellular to circuit level to behaviour, and computational modelling of neuronal activity readouts.
  • You acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • You publish in high profile international journals.
  • You develop a national and international scientific network.
  • You supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

  • You play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally.

  • You accept coordinating responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research and/or service provision in the Department, Faculty and University and you contribute to policy.
  • Your leadership style is motivating and coaching. You are attentive to your employees’ growth and development processes.

  • You hold a PhD in Biomedical or Medical Sciences, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Bio-engineering, Neurosciences or related fields.
  • You can demonstrate several years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent).
  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies. You have established an excellent research portfolio, preferentially including high-impact publications.
  • You have a profile that complements existing neuroscience expertise, and as a true team player you are willing to foster collaborations with and between the existing neuroscience teams in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and by extension the University of Antwerp.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. You are motivated to develop your teaching skills further through the professionalisation opportunities available.
  • If you do not master Dutch, the administrative language of the university, you should be willing to obtain a CEFR B2 level of proficiency in Dutch. As soon as you take on teaching duties as a course unit coordinator, you should be able to demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in the language of instruction. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members on an integration trajectory and offers tailor-made language coaching in compliance with Flanders’ statutory language regulations.
  • You demonstrate leadership potential and organisational skills.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
