The Faculty of Law has the following full-time vacancy: senior academic staff in the field of competition law

Position

You will contribute to the University of Antwerp’s three core tasks: education (40%), research (40%) and services (20%). Your role also includes organisational and managerial aspects.

Education

  • You provide high-quality education in competition law (master level).
  • Your teaching role evolves along with the study programmes of the master of laws and the LL.M. The courses you teach may include the ‘Advanced course on European competition law in context’ and, depending on your expertise and your language skills, some programme components in the broad domain of market law and/or business law. You pay attention to the impact of technological evolutions and digitalisation within this domain.
  • You play a role in developing activating, student-centred and competence-driven programme components and study programmes.
  • You supervise students and their master dissertations.

Research

  • You expand high-quality scientific research in the broad domain of free, fair and undistorted competition between companies, particularly taking into account the impact of technological evolutions and digitalisation in this domain.
  • You initiate new lines of research and coordinate the progress of scientific research projects. You also participate in ongoing research programmes.
  • You acquire and manage national and international research funding.
  • You publish in international journals and specialist literature.
  • You develop an international scientific network.
  • You supervise PhD students and postdoctoral researchers.

Services

  • You play a role in the provision of both academic services and service to society, within the institution and externally. You participate in student recruitment, boards and committees, popular science communication, and so on.

Organisation and leadership

  • You accept coordinating responsibilities in the areas of teaching, research and/or service provision and you contribute to policy.
  • Your leadership style is motivating and coaching. You are attentive to your employees’ growth and development processes.

Profile

  • You hold the degrees of Master of Laws and Doctor of Laws on dissertation.
  • You can demonstrate several years of postdoctoral experience (or equivalent).
  • You submit the following documents in English:
    • a vision statement for the programme components you will lecture. You can also make suggestions for new programme components in the broad domain of market law and/or company law (e.g. (cartel) agreements, mergers, state aid, abuse of dominance). You can find the programmes of the master of laws and the LL.M online.
    • a detailed research proposal for the next five years (approx. 5.000 words) based on the research lines of the Research group Business & Law of the Faculty of Law and in which you also approach the research from an international perspective. You focus on your strategy on research funding acquisitions, publications and network building. You also include a concise description (1 page) of a PhD research you intend to supervise.
    • two abstracts of the scientific content of the research plan – a scientific abstract and an abstract in layman's terms – maximum 500 words.

The prior conditions are conditions of admissibility.

  • Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies. You have established an excellent research portfolio including international publications.
  • Your teaching competences are in line with the University of Antwerp’s educational vision. You are motivated to develop your teaching skills further through the professionalisation opportunities available.
  • You can demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency of English. In order to prove your versatility in the field of education and to take on leadership and organisational duties, you should be able to demonstrate a CEFR C1 level of proficiency in Dutch, i.e. within five years after your appointment, upon permanent appointment or as soon as you take on Dutch teaching duties as a programme component coordinator. The University of Antwerp supports international staff members through an integration trajectory and offers tailor-made language coaching in compliance with Flanders’ statutory language regulations.
  • You demonstrate leadership potential and organisational skills.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.
  • You are willing to take part in a behavioural and skills assessment.

What we offer

  • We offer a full-time appointment as a member of the senior academic staff (Dutch: Zelfstandig Academisch Personeel, ZAP). The level of your appointment (lecturer or senior lecturer) is determined on the basis of your professional experience and academic qualifications. Junior ZAP members are usually offered temporary appointment as a tenure track lecturer for five years, which is then followed by permanent appointment as a senior lecturer. Appointment as a senior lecturer leads to permanent appointment (tenure) after a maximum of three years. A favourable performance appraisal is always required for permanent appointment.
  • Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scales for senior academic staff.                        
  • The planned start date is 15 September 2021.
  • You will do most of your work at City Campus in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
