Lund University School of Economics and Management is one of eight faculties within Lund University. The Department of Economic History is a research-intensive department that employs about 100 people: researchers, teachers, technical/administrative staff, and Ph.D. candidates. The department has a large PhD programme and co-ordinates three international Master programmes. The Department has a well established reputation for wide-ranging research with an emphasis on long-term processes, and with economic theory and quantitative methods as important methodological tools. Strong research areas at the department include economic growth and structural change, innovation, energy and sustainability, development economics, and economic demography, as well as financial history and education and the labour market. Lund University announces one or more positions as senior lecturer in economic history. This is a permanent, full time, position at the Department of Economic History at Lund University School of Economics and Management.

Work tasks

The position consists of both research and teaching within the subject area economic history. Administrative tasks can also be included. Teaching can be at the undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate level. The maximum load of teaching for senior lecturers at Lund University is 70 percent, but often less due to research funding. At the Department of Economic History, the average is 40 percent. 


To be employed as senior lecturer applicants must have demonstrated teaching expertise and have a PhD or the corresponding foreign degree within the subject area economic history, or equivalent scientific competence. Applicants are required to have demonstrated pedagogical skills, and also pedagogical education by having participated in training in teaching and learning in higher education comprising at least 5 weeks (7.5 credits).

Qualifications and assessment criteria

Applicants must be experienced and show competence within the subject area economic history.

It is desirable that applicants who do not have Swedish as their mother tongue gain reasonable knowledge of Swedish after four years of employment.

For appointments to senior lecturer, the following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • a good national and international standing as a researcher. The requirement for international experience shall be assessed with consideration to the character and traditions of the subject.
  • good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities on different levels and using a variety of teaching methods.
  • an ability to supervise doctoral students to achieve a PhD.
  • an ability to engage with wider society and communicate his or her activities.
  • a good general ability to lead and develop activities.

The Department of Economic History aims at a balance between research and teaching. Equal importance will be given to the scholarly and pedagogical skills when assessing the applicants. Administrative competence is also considered.

In the overall assessment of scholarly skills special weight will be given to publications in international peer reviewed journals and the applicant’s ability to receive external research funding. Moreover, the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and to inform about research will be considered.

The overall assessment of pedagogical qualifications include training in teaching and learning in higher education, pedagogical experience and pedagogical skills. Emphasis will be placed on documented ability to conduct teaching and supervision at different levels. Course evaluations are expected to be included in the documentation on pedagogical skills.

Other personal ability that is of importance to fulfil the working tasks in a satisfactory way will also be assessed.
