The Joint Faculties of the Humanities and Theology have eight departments and carries out large and varied work within research and education with the purpose to understand people as cultural and social beings. The faculties have some 700 employees and around 4000 students.

The Centre for Languages and Literature at Lund University (SOL) is Sweden’s largest university department for languages, linguistics, literature and area studies. SOL provides a wide range of freestanding courses complemented with an increasing number of first and second cycle degree programmes. Housing 33 subjects and roughly the same number of PhD programmes, SOL is a solid foundation for broad and deep education and research, characterised by national and international visibility. SOL is managed by a board chaired by the Head of Department. The management also includes two assistant heads of department with special areas of responsibility. More than 250 people are employed and around 3 000 students, including around 100 PhD students, conduct their studies at SOL.


The successful applicant will be part of the English division within section 4 of the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) at Lund University. This unit consists of around 20 active researchers, teaching staff and doctoral students in English literature and English language and linguistics, with various specialisations ( In recent years, secondary school subject teacher training, academic writing and English for specific purposes have also become important elements of our activities, so we offer courses for many different categories of students and staff.

The successful applicant will be part of the group of teaching staff members working on developing and teaching courses in English literature and literary analysis, both within our general range of courses and within the teacher training programme, including supervision of essays and theses specialising in literature. Teaching of components that do not fall under English literature can also be included in this position, such as academic writing and oral proficiency. Courses and components intended for people studying other subjects than English may also be part of the position. Teaching amounts to a maximum of 70% of full-time employment for a senior lecturer at Lund University.

With regard to research, the successful applicant will be expected either to broaden our expertise in English literature or to further reinforce already strong areas. A senior lecturer at Lund University has at least 20% of full-time employment set aside for research. The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with colleagues at the division and the Centre for Languages and Literature, and to take an active part in relevant seminars.

At the English division, we expect a strong presence in the workplace. The successful applicant will be expected to take part in meetings at the division and the section and to take an active part in the development and quality assurance of the subject across our activities.

Qualifications and assessment

For appointment as a senior lecturer, the individual must have:

  • been awarded a PhD or have the corresponding research expertise or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve,
  • demonstrated teaching expertise, and
  • completed at least five weeks of training in teaching and learning in higher education or acquired equivalent competence by other means.

Excellent, documented proficiency in English is required for this position. Within two years of the starting date, the holder of the position will be expected to be able to read texts in Swedish, to take part in meetings in Swedish and, in exceptional cases, to teach texts in Swedish.

General assessment criteria: the degree of research, teaching, administrative and other expertise that is of value in view of the work duties and subject matter of the post as well as other personal skills of relevance to perform the duties well.

For employment as senior lecturer the following is specifically required:

  • a good national and international standing as a researcher,
  • good teaching ability, including a good ability to conduct, develop and lead teaching and other educational activities at different levels and using a variety of teaching methods,
  • an ability to participate in supervising doctoral students,
  • an ability to participate in and develop public engagement and other outreach activities, as well as otherwise lead and develop activities.

Desirable qualifications in descending order of importance:

  • Doctoral degree in English literature.
  • Broad experience of teaching English, in particular English literature, at undergraduate and MA level.
  • A track record of published, post-doctoral research in English literature.
  • Experience of teaching English on a teacher training programme.

In the assessment, equal consideration is given to teaching expertise and research expertise.
