Human Geography explores the relationship between people and places. The subject is rooted in theoretical frameworks in human geography and the social sciences. Urban and regional planning involves balancing and weighing up different interests against one another to create the conditions for sustainable development. The Department of Human Geography has a broad social geography focus, and teaching takes place in the main subject areas of Human Geography, Urban and Regional Planning, Geography, and Global Development. We also participate in several interdisciplinary programmes at both undergraduate and master levels.


Main Responsibilities

The duties consist of teaching, research and administration, as well as monitoring and contributing to developments in the field of Urban and Regional Planning from both a research and teaching perspective.

Teaching will primarily take place in the urban planning programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, although teaching will also occur in other programmes. Teaching at undergraduate level is mainly conducted in Swedish, whilst teaching at postgraduate level is conducted in English. During the first two years, teaching duties are expected to amount to at least 50%.

The employment is shared between research and teaching according to the current collective agreement.


Qualification Requirements

Eligible applicants for the position of senior lecturer should hold a doctoral degree in Human Geography or Urban and Regional Planning, or possess equivalent academic expertise, and have demonstrated teaching ability.

It is required to have teaching and research experience in the subject area Urban Planning.

The applicant must have the ability to cooperate with colleagues and other skills required to meet the demands of the position.

To perform the duties, the applicant must have a documented ability to use Swedish in speech and writing at a professional level. This can be demonstrated through teaching experience in Swedish or a CEFR B2 certificate.


Assessment Criteria

Special and equal emphasis will be placed on teaching and research skills.

Strong emphasis will be placed on:

  • Teaching experience at undergraduate and master’s levels
  • Ability to cooperate with colleagues and researchers
  • Experience in obtaining external research funding in Urban and Regional Planning
  • Knowledge of Swedish urban planning and planning theory or practice

Emphasis will also be placed on:

  • Administrative skills
  • Collaboration with society and dissemination of research
  • Higher education pedagogical training (15 credits or equivalent is a merit)

Teaching proficiency must be well documented and assessable.


About the Employment

This position (“universitetslektor”) is a full-time permanent employment. A six-month probationary period may apply.

If the applicant lacks 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education (or equivalent), they must complete this within the first two years of employment.
