Subject area

Linguistics

Subject area description

Linguistics is a subject authorised to award qualifications at all levels, including in third-cycle studies. It can be included as a main field of study in Bachelor and Master Degrees. Linguistics is also part of the Department's Master in Communication specialising in public communication for authorities and the Master in Language Technology program.

Linguistic interaction is the main overarching theme for research in linguistics at FLoV. This entails an interest in the formal modelling of not only the systems of conventions that make up particular languages but also the social practices and psychological mechanisms enabling language use.

At the department, there is also the Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability (CLASP), funded by a 10-year grant from the Swedish Research Council (2015-2025). CLASP is devoted to research and advanced training in the application of probabilistic modelling and machine learning methods to core issues in linguistic theory and cognition.

Job assignments

The position involves both teaching and research. Teaching duties are at first and second cycle level in Linguistics (in areas such as phonetics, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics), in the Masters programme for communication officers in the public sector, and in the Master in Language Technology (MLT) programme. Teaching is mostly in Swedish, with the exception of the MLT, which is taught in English.  Teaching assignments within the Masters programmes are performed in cooperation with other departments.

The successful applicant is expected to conduct research within linguistics, and to apply for external research funding, which will increase their employment percentage accordingly. The applicant must in their application, describe how their research fits with the subject's overall theme (linguistic interaction) as described above.

The holder of the position is expected to be physically present at the Department and regularly participate in its operations. Other tasks may also be required within the context of the employment.

Eligibility

The qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance. Candidates must have completed their doctoral degree and have pedagogical experiences and skills.

Assessment

Teaching and research skills will be equally weighted in the assessment of candidates suitability. Administrative experience is considered an advantage. Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and the appointments procedure of the University of Gothenburg.

For a position as teacher the applicant should be chosen who, -after an overall assessment of skills and development potential, is judged most suitable to carry out the tasks involved in the position-. Proven ability in planning, performing, evaluating and developing, both independently and in cooperation with others, relevant teaching, including supervision is an advantage, as is documented ability to develop and deploy innovative teaching methods.

A good publication track record, credentials in the form of successful research grant applications, and a documented ability to engage in public outreach activities will be considered an advantage when assessing candidates’ scientific skills. We are looking for a candidate who can contribute to our subject area both academically and pedagogically, and who has the personal qualities required to collaborate both with a small team and more widely within the university in order to support the development of the department.
