The Faculty of Medicine offers cutting-edge environments for Precision Medicine and Diagnostics research in collaboration with the Faculties of Engineering and Science, regional healthcare, and other partners.

This tenure-track position as Associate Senior Lecturer (DDLS Fellow) targets outstanding junior scientists with international research experience. The appointed candidate will be enrolled in the Wallenberg Center for Molecular Medicine (WCMM) at Lund University. The position is time-limited to five years with the possibility for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Background

Data-driven Life Science (DDLS) leverages data, computational methods, and artificial intelligence to study biological systems at all levels, from molecules to ecosystems.

The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for DDLS aims to recruit and train the next generation of data-driven life scientists and build world-leading computational and data science capabilities in Sweden. The program is funded with 3.3 billion SEK (~350 MUSD) over 12 years by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation (KAW).

The DDLS program supports 50 junior group leaders (“Fellows”), over 210 postdoctoral positions, and a research school for 260 PhDs. Fellows are recruited to 11 participating universities/organizations, yet brought together under DDLS with four strategic areas:

  1. Cell and molecular biology

  2. Evolution and biodiversity

  3. Precision medicine and diagnostics

  4. Epidemiology and biology of infection

Each DDLS Fellow receives a recruitment package of 17 MSEK (~1.6 MUSD) for a 5-year period, covering salary and resources including PhD students and postdocs. Fellowships are tenure-track positions, with host organizations assuming long-term faculty appointments following a tenure evaluation.

Position Focus

The Associate Senior Lecturer will focus on data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics, covering:

  • Data integration, analysis, visualization, and interpretation for patient stratification.

  • Discovery of biomarkers for disease risk, diagnosis, drug response, and health monitoring.

  • Innovative development and application of computational methods, including machine learning and artificial intelligence.

The research will leverage Swedish and international resources such as molecular data (omics), imaging, electronic health records, longitudinal registries, and biobanks.

Work Duties

  • Develop and maintain a strong data-driven research program aligned with ongoing preclinical and clinical research.

  • Conduct research and supervise research activities, with up to 20% teaching at graduate and postgraduate levels.

  • Participate in local and national DDLS Fellow programs, SciLifeLab initiatives, and WCMM activities.

  • Additional duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent research expertise (Chapter 4, Section 4a, Higher Education Ordinance).

  • Priority given to candidates completing their degree within the last 7 years, unless exceptional circumstances apply (e.g., sick leave, parental leave).

Assessment Criteria

Successful candidates are expected to become future research leaders in data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics. Assessment will focus on:

  1. Scientific excellence

    • Independently performed research with high-level publications and competitive grants.

    • Novelty of scientific approach enhancing faculty research.

    • International research experience is highly valued.

  2. Teaching credentials

    • Pedagogical skills in planning, executing, and evaluating teaching, supervision, and examination.

  3. Leadership skills

    • Administrative experience, leadership, research supervision, group management, and societal engagement.

Promotion to Senior Lecturer

  • Associate Senior Lecturers can apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer based on:

    • Completion of ≥5 weeks of higher education pedagogical training.

    • Senior authorship of several peer-reviewed articles (benchmark: ≥3, with ≥2 during the Associate Senior Lecturer appointment).

    • Secured external research grants as principal applicant sufficient to maintain independent research.

    • Supervision of at least one doctoral student from admission to mid-term review.

    • Qualification according to the Faculty of Medicine’s guidelines for appointment as Docent.

Promotion is a one-time application, at least six months before the end of the Associate Senior Lecturer appointment.
