The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
Data-driven life science (DDLS) uses data, computational methods, and artificial intelligence to study biological systems and processes at all levels, from molecular structures and cellular processes to human health and global ecosystems.
The SciLifeLab and Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (DDLS), coordinated by SciLifeLab, aims to recruit and train the next generation of data-driven life scientists and to establish globally leading computational and data science capabilities in Sweden. The program is funded with 3.3 billion SEK (approximately 350 MUSD) over 12 years by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg (KAW) Foundation.
The DDLS program:
funds 50 high-profile Fellows
supports over 210 postdoctoral positions
includes a research school of 260 PhD students, including industry PhDs and postdocs
Fellows are recruited to 11 participating universities/organizations and brought together within the DDLS program, which spans four strategic areas:
Cell and molecular biology
Evolution and biodiversity
Precision medicine and diagnostics
Epidemiology and biology of infection
More information: www.scilifelab.se/data-driven
During 2022–2024, 39 Fellows were recruited. The program now seeks to recruit 11 additional Fellows. Each DDLS Fellow receives a 17 MSEK (approximately 1.6 MUSD) recruitment package for five years, covering salary and research resources such as PhD students and postdoctoral positions.
The Fellowships are tenure-track positions. Host organizations assume responsibility for long-term faculty appointments following tenure evaluation.
The future of life science is data-driven. Will you be leading the change with us?
The University of Gothenburg is recruiting a DDLS Fellow in Data-Driven Precision Medicine and Diagnostics for a tenure-track position as Associate Senior Lecturer.
The position includes a generous career package and provides the opportunity to become an independent researcher within the academic environment at Sahlgrenska Academy (Faculty of Medicine), closely connected to:
Sahlgrenska University Hospital
Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Gothenburg
AstraZeneca
Chalmers University of Technology
The Fellow will also be part of:
the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM)
the national DDLS programme at SciLifeLab
At Sahlgrenska Academy and the Faculty of Science and Technology, extensive research relevant to this position is conducted, including:
genomics and metagenomics
culturomics
proteomics and transcriptomics
software development
machine learning and large-scale statistical health data analysis
The Division of Data Science and AI (DSAI) at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department between Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg.
DSAI conducts internationally recognized research in:
modern AI
computer science
algorithms
The division also includes research groups focused on applications in:
life sciences
medicine
pharmacology
Active collaborations exist with Sahlgrenska University Hospital and AstraZeneca, and many projects are part of the Wallenberg Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).
Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics
Data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics encompass data integration, analysis, visualization, and interpretation for:
patient stratification
biomarker discovery
disease risk assessment
diagnosis and drug response
health monitoring
Research is expected to use strong national and international assets, including:
molecular data (e.g. omics)
imaging
electronic healthcare records
longitudinal patient and population registries
biobanks
Applicants are expected to have a strong computational focus, developing and applying novel methods based on:
machine learning
artificial intelligence
advanced computational techniques
The successful candidate is expected to:
establish an independent and competitive research programme
actively apply for external research funding
collaborate with:
Sahlgrenska Academy
Faculty of Science and Technology
Sahlgrenska University Hospital
AstraZeneca
Chalmers University of Technology
The Fellow will:
participate in WCMTM activities
attend DDLS programme meetings
collaborate within the national network of Wallenberg Centres for Molecular Medicine at:
University of Gothenburg
Lund University
Linköping University
Umeå University
SciLifeLab (Stockholm/Uppsala)
The position includes teaching at:
doctoral
master’s
undergraduate levels
Teaching duties include:
lectures
exercises
examinations
supervision of PhD, medical, master’s, and undergraduate students
Candidates without formal higher education teaching qualifications must complete such training within one year of appointment.
Proficiency in Swedish at B2 level (GERS) is required no later than six months before the end of the Associate Senior Lecturer appointment. Mandatory Swedish language courses are provided.
Eligibility requirements follow:
Chapter 4, Section 4a of the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance
Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg
Applicants must:
hold a PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent scientific competence
Preference is given to applicants who obtained their PhD within seven years of the application deadline. Earlier degrees may be considered if special circumstances apply (e.g. parental leave or illness), which must be documented.
Proficiency in teaching in Swedish or English is required.
Assessment is based primarily on scientific merits, and secondarily on pedagogical and administrative merits.
Emphasis is placed on:
independent research in data-driven precision medicine and diagnostics
integration of molecular and clinical data
translational research and diagnostic development
Evaluation focuses on quality rather than quantity of scientific output. Merits include:
success in attracting external funding
participation in national and international collaborations
quality of the submitted research programme
demonstrated research leadership
Emphasis is placed on:
documented teaching experience
supervision of students at undergraduate and doctoral levels
quality of teaching documentation
Experience in:
