Position

Senior Lecturer in Practical Philosophy

We are seeking a candidate for a full-time permanent position as Senior Lecturer in Practical Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, Lund University.


Workplace and Academic Environment

The Department of Philosophy has approximately 70 staff members and is divided into three subject areas:

  • Practical Philosophy

  • Theoretical Philosophy

  • Cognitive Science

The department is a research-intensive environment that combines internationally recognized research with high-quality teaching for approximately 250 students.

Research in Practical Philosophy at Lund University has gained international recognition, particularly in:

  • Value theory

  • Philosophy of action and social ontology

  • Theory of law

  • Moral responsibility

Teaching focuses on:

  • Moral philosophy

  • Metaethics

  • Applied ethics

  • Theory of law

  • Political philosophy

  • Practical rationality

  • Action theory

  • Decision theory

  • Aesthetics

  • Philosophy of religion

Advanced-level courses provide opportunities for specialization leading to a Master's degree (60/120 credits).

Since 2014, the department has also offered the undergraduate Practical Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) programme in cooperation with:

  • The Department of Political Science

  • The Department of Economics

Duties

The successful candidate will conduct:

  • Teaching.

  • Research.

  • Supervision in Practical Philosophy.

The successful applicant will also work together with colleagues to further develop the department's research and educational environment.

The position includes:

  • Teaching at first-, second- and third-cycle levels.

  • Supervision of Master's students.

  • Supervision of doctoral students in Practical Philosophy.

  • Possible responsibility for the PPE programme.

  • Internal and/or external assignments and positions of trust.

  • Administrative duties.

  • Actively seeking external research funding.


Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • A doctoral degree in Practical Philosophy, equivalent research competence, or other professional expertise relevant to the subject and duties.

  • Demonstrated teaching expertise.

  • Completed higher education teaching and learning training equivalent to at least five weeks, or equivalent competence obtained in another way.

Applicants who have not had the opportunity to complete the required pedagogical training may still be appointed but must complete the training within the first two years of employment.

Applicants must also have:

  • Well-documented ability to teach in Swedish.

Applicants without sufficient Swedish proficiency may still be appointed but must acquire the required proficiency within two years of appointment to enable teaching and administrative duties requiring Swedish.

In addition, applicants must have:

  • Well-documented proficiency in spoken and written academic English.


Assessment Criteria

The following criteria will be considered:

  • Good national and international standing as a researcher. International experience will be assessed with consideration given to the traditions of the discipline.

  • Strong teaching ability, including the ability to conduct, develop and lead educational activities at different levels using a variety of teaching methods.

  • Ability to supervise doctoral students to completion.

  • Ability to collaborate with wider society and communicate research and educational activities.

  • Good leadership and organizational abilities.

Teaching and research qualifications will be given equal weight.

Personal qualities relevant to the position will also be taken into account.


Desired Qualifications

Research Qualifications (Priority Order)

  • Documented research experience in at least one of the following areas:

    • Metaethics (including value theory)

    • Moral philosophy

    • Political philosophy

  • Documented success in securing external research funding.

Teaching Qualifications (Priority Order)

  • Broad teaching experience in Practical Philosophy at:

    • Undergraduate level

    • Advanced level

    • Doctoral level

  • Teaching experience in:

    • Metaethics (including value theory)

    • Political philosophy

  • Experience supervising students at advanced and doctoral levels leading to awarded degrees.
