Subject/subject description

The subject area of public health sciences is defined as the study of public health and its determinants. Public health refers to the health status of the population, including changes and distribution across historical time as well as over individual life courses. Factors that affect public health commonly involve social and societal structures and how these, through the interplay with individual prerequisites, shape people’s habits and living conditions. Public health sciences also study the development of public health policy and practice.

Main responsibilities

Main duties primarily include teaching and research in public health sciences, with orientation towards one of the Department’s main areas: health inequalities.

The successful applicant is expected to actively participate in course and programme development, and should be prepared to take on administrative tasks. The applicant is also expected to actively apply for external funding and contribute to the Department’s research environment.

The position includes 70 percent teaching. Teaching additionally includes course development, supervision, and course administration. A maximum reduction of 50 percent is normally allowed for own research.

Qualification requirements

Eligible applicants for the position of senior lecturer should hold a PhD in the social sciences or public health sciences, or have equivalent research skills and have demonstrated teaching expertise.

Equivalent research skills mean that the applicant could have a PhD that is not within the social sciences or public health sciences, but that their dissertation and/or continuing research is clearly aligned with the focus on the current position, i.e. health inequalities.

Teaching proficiency should normally have been demonstrated through teaching experience at both the undergraduate- and master’s levels. Teaching proficiency should be well documented and in a manner that makes it possible to assess the quality of the teaching activities.

The applicant must have the ability to cooperate with colleagues as well as other abilities that are required in order successfully to meet the demands of the position.

Excellent knowledge of English is a requirement for the position. Since the teaching is conducted in English, the applicant must be able to use English in speech and writing, which is shown, for example, by documented experience of teaching in English.

Assessment criteria

Special and equal emphasis will be placed on teaching and research skills, demonstrated through teaching, supervision, course management, and pedagogical competence development, as well as research skills demonstrated through own research. Regarding research skills, international publications during the past 5 years are particularly qualifying.

Strong emphasis will be placed on:

  • A documented ability to cooperate well with colleagues and fellow researchers.
  • Teaching and research skills in the area of health inequalities.
  • Having successfully planned, applied for and obtained research project funds from external research funding bodies.

Emphasis will also be placed on administrative skills, managerial experience, and the ability to collaborate with the surrounding society and inform about research and developmental work.

It is a merit to have completed at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge.

Additional information

An applicant who does not have at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education, and is not deemed to have acquired equivalent knowledge, must complete such training within the first two years of employment.

Proficiency in Swedish is not a requirement for the position, but the applicant has to be ready to take on administrative and pedagogical tasks that demand an understanding and usage of Swedish after two years of employment.
