Role Description

Department

As part of a strategic investment in new posts, the Department of Education is seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer or Lecturer in Science Education. The successful candidate will join the University of York Science Education Group (UYSEG), one of the Department’s four research centres, and will contribute to teaching. 

Role

The role is an exciting opportunity for the successful candidate to make a substantial contribution to the research and curriculum innovation activities work of UYSEG. Your role will be to engage actively in research, to demonstrate intellectual leadership and to contribute to, or lead on, the production of high-impact research publications and research outcomes.

You will be expected to design, develop and deliver teaching on our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, to carry out supervision and to undertake a range of administrative and managerial responsibilities.

Lecturer in Science Education

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD in science education or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Good knowledge of education and science education as areas of enquiry, of the education systems in one or more contexts (in the UK or elsewhere) and of national and international education trends and developments in science education
  • Expertise in one or more specialist areas of research in science education that will complement and enhance the Department’s research strategy and goals
  • Knowledge of a range of research techniques and methodologies
  • Knowledge of a range of teaching techniques to enthuse and engage students and of teaching and learning approaches in school science
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills, including ability to write and/or contribute to publications and/or to disseminate research findings using other appropriate media
  • Ability to design teaching material and deliver either across a range of modules or within a subject area
  • Ability to supervise the work of others, for example in research teams or projects or as an UG, PG, PhD or postdoctoral supervisor
  • Ability to develop research objectives, projects and proposals and proven ability to contribute to high quality research which is publicly evidenced
  • Evidence of dissemination of research findings which may include:  the presentation of papers at conferences and workshops; participation in public engagement events to disseminate research; the publishing of chapters in text books; the publishing of papers; articles or reviews in academic journals or elsewhere; the construction of websites
  • Display creativity, initiative and judgement in applying appropriate approaches to teaching, learning support and scholarly activities
  • Show commitment to the department/university outside of their chosen field, for example undertaking  management and administration duties

Candidates applying for the Senior Lecturer position must be able to demonstrate all of the above criteria and the following:

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • Outstanding qualities and achievements in scholarship and research at a national and international level
  • Ability to provide academic leadership in research area both internally and externally and to lead a research team where appropriate
  • Highly developed oral communication skills, including the ability to teach at any level within area of expertise, and across a range of subjects at a more introductory level, and demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment in the process of teaching
  • A demonstrated ability to win external research grant funding, preferably as the lead applicant
  • A proven track record in research with high quality journal publications and conference presentations
  • An extensive track record of teaching and learning in HE at undergraduate and postgraduate level or in a demonstrably similar context
