The Department of Sociology and Work Science currently has approximately 120 employees, including teachers, researchers, doctoral students, and administrative staff. The department conducts research, teaching, and collaboration in a variety of areas. Research is conducted in fields such as labor market, work life, social deviations, digitalization, emotions, gender, migration, environmental issues, social movements, governance and organization, as well as technology and science. Education is offered in a range of areas such as sociology, work science, human resource management, criminology, and social psychology. The department also has a significant commitment to several of the University of Gothenburg’s educational programs, particularly within teacher education. Collaboration and development projects are carried out in both research and education with partners in the private sector and public sector, such as the Center for Global Human Resource Management (CGHRM).

Several courses and programs offer teaching in conflict resolution. We are now seeking a Senior Lecturer in Work Science with a focus on Conflict Resolution who can lead and further develop research and education in the subject.

Subject area 

Work Science with a focus on Conflict Resolution. An interdisciplinary background in fields such as psychology, sociology, pedagogy, human resource management, behavioral science, public health science, social work, or other relevant disciplines or interdisciplinary fields is possible.

Subject area description 

The advertised lectureship pertains to conflict resolution. The focus of the subject is partly to deepen the understanding of forms and dynamics in group processes and collaboration climate in the workplace, and partly how communication strategies in work groups, organizations, and in society are developed and can be constructively processed with preventive work and problem-solving at various levels.

Duties 

The duties are focused on teaching and research in conflict resolution. Primarily, teaching is expected to take place in the department’s basic and advanced courses in conflict resolution. Teaching at the advanced level and commissioned education also occurs, as well as supervision of theses with a focus on conflict resolution.

Teaching is conducted in the form of lectures, seminars, and workshops with skills training and reflection, individual and group-based supervision, and other teaching forms with an expanded epistemology. Course responsibility, assessment, and examination are included in the position. Teaching is conducted in Swedish, with occasional elements in English. The applicant should be prepared to undertake teaching within the department’s other teaching assignments if needed. The extent of this part of the position is regulated by agreement between the employer and the employee.

The position also includes individual research, and there is an expectation that the applicant actively contributes to strengthening the research environment regarding conflict resolution at the department. This is done by taking responsibility for research projects and research applications, participating in seminars and national and international conferences, and authoring high-quality scientific publications.

Professional development and other tasks, such as administrative work beyond those included within the framework of the above areas, are part of the duties of a senior lecturer.

Eligibility 

The eligibility criteria for employing teaching staff are set out in Chapter 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance and in the Appointment Procedure for Teaching Posts at the University of Gothenburg. 

To be eligible for appointment as a senior lecturer, other than within disciplines in the fine, applied or performing arts, the applicant is required to have demonstrated teaching expertise and been awarded a PhD or has the corresponding research competence or some other professional expertise that is of value in view of the subject matter of the post and the duties that it will involve. 

For this position, good knowledge of Swedish, both spoken and written, is a requirement.

 

Assessment criteria 

 

According to the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at the University of Gothenburg with the Faculty of Social Sciences’ local application (GU 2019/843), the candidate who, after a comprehensive assessment of competence and development potential, is deemed to have the best conditions to carry out the duties included in the position shall be selected. Merit evaluation is only conducted among eligible applicants.

When assessing the applicants’ merits, equal weight will be given to scientific and pedagogical competence. When evaluating merits, equal care will be devoted to reviewing scientific competence as to reviewing pedagogical competence, which is why applicants should place equal emphasis on presenting their pedagogical merits as their scientific merits.

Scientific competence is demonstrated through scientific publications and ongoing participation in national and international research collaborations. This also includes the ability to obtain external research funding. When assessing scientific competence, particular emphasis is placed on publications with a peer review system, regardless of publication form (books, journals, reports). The quality and impact of the publications are given more weight than the total number of publications.

Pedagogical competence should be demonstrated through documented and certified experience of planning and conducting teaching in various forms (course responsibility, lectures, seminars, workshops, distance education, supervision) at the basic and advanced levels. When assessing pedagogical competence, particular emphasis is placed on completed and documented efforts that have contributed to developing education and teaching and improving quality through, for example, course development.

Experience in teaching and research in conflicts, conflict resolution, and group dynamic perspectives in the workplace is particularly meritorious.

Importance will also be attached to the applicant’s ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to inform about research and development work in the criminological field. The quality of the collaboration will be considered in the assessment.

The position will be offered to the applicant who, after an overall assessment of pedagogical and scientific competence, is deemed to have the best conditions to carry out the duties included in the position, collaborate and cooperate with other staff, and contribute to a positive development of the activities.

If higher education pedagogical qualifications in accordance with the requirements at the University of Gothenburg (courses PIL101, PIL102, and PIL103) are lacking at the time of application, this must be validated, or the specified education must be completed within one year from the start of the employment.

 

Employment 

The position is full-time, permanent, with placement at the Department of Sociology and Work Science. The start date is by agreement. [
