The Department of Philosophy at Stockholm University invites applications for a permanent position as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in practical philosophy. The Department of Philosophy at Stockholm University is the largest in Sweden, with lively research groups in a broad range of philosophical areas. The department is visited regularly by internationally-renowned researchers and participates in international and national networks and research projects including the department's Stockholm Center for the Ethics of War and Peace and in collaboration with the Institute for Futures Studies. Stockholm University has selected Philosophy as one of the university's leading research areas.

Main responsibilities

The appointee will conduct research and teaching in practical philosophy. Practical philosophy includes applied ethics, normative ethics, meta-ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of action, philosophy of the social and behavioral sciences (including social ontology and philosophy of economics), philosophy of religion, aesthetics, philosophy of law, decision theory, game theory, and the history of these sub-disciplines. The responsibilities include research, teaching, and supervision at the basic, advanced, and doctoral level as well as administration. The responsibilities will to a significant degree involve teaching and administration in the undergraduate program in Business, Ethics and Sustainability. A large part of the duties (at least 50%) consists of teaching and this will mostly be carried out in English. Within the program in Business, Ethics and Sustainability, teaching will exclusively be conducted in English.

Qualification requirements

In order to qualify for the position, the applicant must have demonstrated pedagogical skill and have completed a doctoral degree or possess equivalent scientific competence in practical philosophy or a similar topic. Ability to teach in English is a requirement. Ability to teach in Swedish at the beginning of the appointment is not a requirement. Within a period of two years, however, the post-holder should carry out certain teaching and administrative tasks that require knowledge of  Swedish.

A general assessment criterion is the ability to work with other people, as well as other general abilities required to perform one’s duties.

Assessment criteria

Special and equal importance will be attached to excellence in research and to the ability to teach and supervise in at least two of the following subject areas: normative ethics, political philosophy, philosophy and public policy, and the philosophy of economics and social science. Modules within these areas form the basis of the undergraduate programs in (a) Business, Ethics and Sustainability, and (b) Philosophy, Economics and Politics. Significant and equal importance will be attached to scientific and pedagogical skill in the subjects and research areas mentioned under “Main Responsibilities” above. Importance is also attached to administrative skills (including demonstrated leadership skills), ability to interact with wider society and to inform about research.

Teaching and learning in higher education

It is a merit to have completed at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education or to have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge. An applicant who does not have at least 15 higher education credits in teaching and learning in higher education must complete such training within the first two years of employment. Applicants who consider themselves to have the equivalent knowledge without having undergone formal training must state in their application how the knowledge was acquired and how it corresponds to competence provided by formal training.
