Teaching Associate in Assyriology

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

The Department of Archaeology is seeking to appoint a part-time, two-year Teaching Associateship in Assyriology, from 1 September 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter, in order to strengthen and support undergraduate and graduate teaching in Assyriology. The Temporary Teaching Associate will be based in the Department of Archaeology, Cambridge.

The primary role of the Teaching Associate will be to support the curriculum in Akkadian language, specifically courses at the introductory and intermediate level. The Teaching Associate will also teach a portion of a Mesopotamian Culture module each year.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Provide major input into the examination of masters and undergraduate courses, including acting as double marker for MPhil coursework submissions;
  • Provide supervisory and advisory support to undergraduate students in their dissertation work as needed.
  • Have a flexible approach to the support provided for teaching.

The successful candidate should have broad knowledge and familiarity with Assyriology, demonstrated ability to teach, experience in research projects in the field, and an excellent knowledge of Akkadian. Training in other cuneiform languages, especially Sumerian, is preferred but not required.

Candidates will need to show evidence of the following qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A good first degree and a doctorate in a relevant subject area completed by the time of employment or equivalent.
  • Evidence of ability to teach the subject effectively at the university level.
  • Good organisational abilities.
  • Ability to play an effective role in the life and work of the department.
  • Capacity to work as part of a team.
