The Department of Philosophy at the University of Nottingham is looking to appoint a Teaching Associate in Philosophy with teaching responsibilities across the undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum. The post is to cover some of the teaching and tutorial responsibilities of Prof. Chris Woodard, who has been appointed Faculty of Arts Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education and Student Experience, for a 4 year term. The role holder will be expected to contribute to the teaching of our third-year module Communicating Philosophy (module details are here). Over the period of the appointment we also anticipate particular teaching needs in ethics (broadly construed) and logic. A candidate who can contribute to the teaching of one or both of these areas will be preferred.

The Department is based in the Humanities Building, located on the University’s main University Park campus. We are a large community, comprising around 25 academic staff. We welcome methodological and topical diversity, and our work covers a broad range of areas including Western, Indian, Chinese, analytic, and continental philosophy. We have a large number of undergraduate students, admitting more than 150 each year. Many students study single honours philosophy, but we also have significant numbers studying joint degrees with English, Psychology, Politics, Economics, Physics, and Theology. The department has thriving masters and PhD courses and a regular programme of research seminars, reading groups, and academic conferences.

We are looking for a philosopher who can contribute to the teaching and administration of the department. The successful candidate will design and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate modules using both online and offline methods. The well-being and development of our students is of utmost importance to us, so the successful candidate will take a proactive role in the pastoral support of students. They will also be responsible for a reasonable share of departmental administration, both individually and in teams, so an ability to collaborate effectively with others is essential.

This is a fixed-term post available until 31 August 2024. Hours of work are part-time (18.13 hours per week).

The role is available to job share, and we positively encourage applications from members of groups who are currently underrepresented in the department, for example women and people from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds. We are also supportive of requests for flexible working and keen to support those with caring responsibilities.

Informal inquiries may be sent to the Head of Department, Neil Sinclair (neil.sinclair@nottingham.ac.uk) or to the Deputy Head of Department, Penelope Mackie (Penelope.mackie@nottingham.ac.uk). Please note that applications sent directly to this email address will not be accepted.
