University Assistant (post doc) at the Department of Philosophy

The advertised position is located at the Department of Philosophy which is part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna is large in international comparison and its members are active within a considerable variety of research areas. The department furthermore offers a range of courses reflecting the breadth of the fields of philosophy while upholding the highest standards within each specialized subject area. Special focus is placed on gaining insight and developing competences in order to contribute to the discussion of current philosophical problems. This intention to acknowledge new philosophical developments and tasks is reflected in a number of co-operations and research fields of the department.

Duration of employment: 6 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: 48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

Active participation in research, teaching and administration at the department:

- Developing and strengthening the independent research profile
- Involvement in research projects / research studies
- Participation in publications
- Participation in the organisation of advanced training courses, meetings, conferences, symposia
- National and international publications and presentations
- Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of third-party funding
- Preparing / writing a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis or equivalent academic achievements
- Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching and research administration


- Doctorate in a field of practical philosophy
- Main areas of research in practical philosophy, the didactics of Philosophy / Ethics and teacher education
- Experience in research methods and academic writing / Publications in subject-relevant media
- Experience in university teaching, especially in the field of didactics of Philosophy / Ethics
- Experience in student support / student supervision
- High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- IT user skills
- Ability to work in a team

In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have

- Experience of working with e-learning
- Experience of working on research projects
- Publications in renowned, subject-relevant media (peer-reviewed, depending on the professional standards)
- International presentation experience

Desirable qualifications are

- Experience of working on research projects
- Experience in the further training of teachers in the field of Philosophy / Ethics
- Experience in supervising students in school internships
- Knowledge of university processes and structures
- Experience in university committee work

Your research focuses on practical philosophy, didactics of philosophy / ethics and teacher training? You are interested in questions of practical philosophy as well as in questions of philosophy and ethical-didactics? You are able to deal with current social developments from a philosophical point of view and present them to an interested general audience? You are willing to co-administer the study modules of the "Ethics for Teachers and Professionals" master's degree, to get involved in the Centre for Teacher Education at the University of Vienna and to actively help shape the introduction of Ethics as a school subject?
