We are now looking for University Lecturer in Business Analytics

The Oulu Business School of the university is an AACSB accredited international research and educational institute. It is one of the eight faculties within the university, having approximately 1 450 students and 100 faculty and staff members. It offers degrees of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Master of Science in Business Administration with majors in Accounting, Finance, Economics, International Business Management, Marketing, and Business Analytics. It has six international MSc programs – the Business Analytics program being given jointly with the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, and a PhD program.

Description of the position

The position includes teaching and related development, as well as research in Business Analytics. The lecturer is also expected to collaborate with the surrounding businesses and the larger society, to advance the dissemination of the related knowledge and promote well-being and competitiveness in the society. The post is located at Oulu Business School of University of Oulu. It will require close collaboration with the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering of the university, especially with respect to the joint international MSc program in Business Analytics.

Within the annual working plan, the duties of the lecturer involve teaching a diverse set of Business Analytics courses, supervising theses, and carrying out research work in the field. The lecturer may also contribute to teaching of other business-related subjects. Cross-curricular collaboration and research-based teaching are important for the successful execution of the job, to further increase cooperation within Business Analytics and between the other disciplines of the business school.

Qualification requirements

A person to be appointed must possess a doctoral degree in Business Administration, Economics or a closely related discipline (such as information management and systems) with high-quality scientific publications. In addition, it is paramount that a candidate has a good knowledge of subjects taught at business schools. The applicant must also show interests and abilities to collaborate with the surrounding business community and include practical aspects into her/his teaching.

The teaching requirements consist of courses in various aspects of data-intensive business analytics and decision making – analyzing data, making forecasts and building models to assist in management decisions in corporations, small and medium-size companies and public organizations, in different application domains.

The following are considered relevant for successfully carrying out the job:

  • Knowledge of and experience in business and economic statistics, applied analytics, data visualization and predictive modeling, including such tools and languages as Python, R, SAS, and Tableau, and possibly also of SQL databases and ERP, BI and CRM tools.
  • Knowledge of and experience in data analysis, statistical analysis and learning, risk analysis, time series analysis, operations management methods, and possibly machine learning.
  • Knowledge of such application domains as business intelligence, market analysis and customer behavior, management decision making, computational finance, and econometrics.
  • Demonstration of high-quality scientific research in the field.
  • Demonstration of teaching skills with a history of successful teaching in business schools or corresponding institutions at the introductory and advanced levels, and in preparing and giving hybrid web or online courses. Interests in developing experiential learning in multi-disciplinary teams, whose members represent different backgrounds and areas of expertise.
  • At least 25 ECTS credits’ worth of pedagogical university studies or equal studies already completed, or to be completed within two years after starting the job.
  • Experience in training, consulting, or development work in commercial or public organizations on business planning and management, financing, accounting, or economy.
  • The language proficiency requirements are defined in the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009). For university teaching and research positions in Finland, a full command of the teaching language, Finnish or Swedish, is required. The language of instruction at the University of Oulu is Finnish, and the degrees are awarded in Finnish. Teaching may also be given in English. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish, he or she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within two years after the selection, as this is essential for the duties as well as for integration into the workplace and Finnish society.

A special attention will be paid to the applicants’ mastery of English.

Salary

A salary in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system for teaching and research personnel: level OV06 - OV07. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Starting salary approx. 4100€ per month (before taxes).

3) Teaching merits significant for the position presented in English in the form of a teaching portfolio or a similar account.

4) Collaboration merits describing the activities through which the applicant has been engaged with the business life and the larger society, related to the applicant’s approach to conduct impactful research and education.

5) A concise (1-2 pages) plan for research work.

6) Copies in electronic form of at most five (5) publications and other works that the applicant thinks should be taken into consideration upon evaluation of eligibility and merits.

Before assuming the duties of the position, the successful applicant must present her/his original degree certificates or certified copies thereof, as well as a signed Curriculum Vitae.

Demonstration Lecture and Interview

Only applications containing all relevant appendices and submitted through e-recruitment system will be considered. Top candidates will be invited to an on-site or remote interview.

Official Employment

The Dean of the Oulu Business School will choose the candidate for the position based on the recommendation by the recruitment committee. He will then submit the recruitment proposal for the approval of the Vice Rector of the university, who will make the final recruitment decision.

The position is scheduled to be filled starting on the 1st of March 2021 or as agreed, and it is subject to a six months’ trial period.
