The successful applicant will cover the area named above in research and teaching, with a reduced teaching load of two weekly credit hours at Freie Universität Berlin (FU). The professorship includes the responsibility of leading a research department at the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam (ZZF).

Appointment requirements are governed by Section 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).

Successful candidates willhave a research background specializing in German and Western European and/or non-European history of the twentieth century. They will have a broad international teaching record, backed by positive teaching evaluations, and be able to demonstrate a history of excellent research work, along with experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects. Very good German and English language skills are essential for this position and possibly very good competency in another modern language. Ideally, they will have experience with knowledge transfer, and proven leadership experience.

Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Section 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities.

The appointee will be responsible for developing the new research focus “Globalization in a Divided World” at the ZZF jointly with the Freie Universität Berlin. He/She is expected to work in close partnership with research projects at the Friedrich Meinecke Institute with a focus on contemporary and/or global history. They will fulfill their teaching requirement of two weekly credit hours and supervise degree theses at the Freie Universität Berlin. The professor will assume leadership responsibilities at the ZZF, and is expected to submit an application in the Leibniz Program for Women Professors. The appointee is expected to address gender and diversity issues in their teaching and research.
