The Department of Conservation, which belongs to the Faculty of Science, provides professional preparatory education and research specialising in cultural heritage matters, landscapes and cultural environments, buildings, gardens, historical cultural objects and interiors. In Gothenburg we offer degree programs in art conservation and historic preservation. Research in conservation is multidisciplinary and multifaceted, with research groups focusing on conservation of cultural property, built environments and crafts. Conservation enhances knowledge, skills and approaches to the cleaning, mending, repairing, maintenance, renovation, transformation, restoration, reuse, adaptation and reconstruction of existing tangible and intangible resources, some of which are defined as cultural heritage. Conservation also investigates the use of cultural heritage and existing resources, where the subject area develops critical perspectives and participatory approaches.

Job assignments

We are looking for a conservator specialised in preventive conservation and inorganic materials. 

The post involves teaching at the Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes in the conservation of cultural heritage objects. The courses aim to give knowledge and skills in the conservation of historical objects. They involve material properties, manufacturing technologies, mechanisms of degradation and their effects on the objects and the corresponding choices of treatment procedures.

You will be asked to teach and coordinate courses regarding preventive conservation, material, documentation, condition assessment, and conservation on first cycle level. Your assignments will include coordination of courses in the Bachelor’s programme, e.g. Inorganic materials 1 and 2, Climate and Environment and Case study in a historic building. You will be asked to give lectures, coordinate practical sessions, and supervise students in the studio and laboratory.


The applicant should have a Master’s or PhD degree in conservation or equivalent with relevance to the subject area and job assignments of the position.

You should have experience in practical conservation of inorganic materials and demonstrated pedagogical skills. Professional experience from museums or heritage institutions will also be considered meritorious. Teaching experience and work experience in Sweden will be viewed as an advantage. Good language skills in Swedish and English are required.


Type of employment: Temporary post during an ongoing recruitment process for Senior lecturer, from 2022-08-01 until 2023-07-31 or the recruitment is finished.
